Why does running hurt?

Running hurts when you push your body passed it's limits (Your body isn't ready yet!) or when you are pushing through to Next Stage of your Running Program.

Running hurts because you're making your muscles work harder than their used to.

Muscles require oxygen and if your using new muscles your body demands more oxygen to feed your muscles.

If your body isn't used to requiring this much oxygen and is using certain running muscles...
You will feel out of breath, a shortness of breath and sometimes muscle pain.

Muscle pain can last for a period of time until your body has become used to exerting itself to this level.

Many people go out and give it all they got, but are unpleasantly surprised at how difficult it is to run!

Running doesn't have to hurt in the beginning if you do it gradually and add walking to the equation. Running only gets better if you follow a 2 minute walk and slip in a 30 second to 1 minute run. Keep doing this for up to 6 times in 30 minutes and you've got yourself a great workout! Keep practicing this technique and you'll be running for 30 minutes in about 6 weeks!

If you want to run...

And are just beginning, join My Running Tips and Motivation Newsletter and I'll send you a free run/walk program. You'll be up and running free in 6 weeks.

Running doesn't have to hurt...

Sometimes hurting while you run is a kind of hurting that isn't so much pain, but a feeling of pushing yourself to the next level. If you ever feel pain that is unbearable, stop and walk it until you're ready to start back up.

Pain is an indication...

Sometimes of a pending injury, make sure that you stay in tune with your body before, during and after your run. Look for signs of pain that does not let up and consult a physician.
NOTE: Absolutely without a doubt get a doctors OK before starting ANY exercise program!

Any time you have a question about the pain, feel free to contact me.

Let me know in the comments section what your struggles are when you exercise.

  1. Great advice! Many of us decide we want to start running and then go out and completely exhaust ourselves and then give up. However, if we try exactly what you said then we will be getting a great work out and slowly strengthening our bodies enough to be able to some day do some of the marathons that we envision. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Running is a great way to get active. Thank you, for sharing your tips to running and motivation, and what is behind any pain. And for sharing the great idea that muscle pain doesn't have to be pain but motivation and a reminder of pushing yourself, while also staying within limits and being safe. Great article!

  3. WOW! Excellent post, Gilly! I can remember the time when I started to work out and thought that because it hurt, it was a good thing! Wrong! Thanks for explaining this so well and for offering help. Running...doesn't have to hurt! ;)

  4. Honestly, when I see people running I ask myself if they are enjoying it. It does look hard. I have a few friends who tried and settled on distance walking. I think if you are a runner you really need to know what you are doing, heed the info in your post, have the right shoes, etc and don't fall or trip.

    1. Yes and don't fall and trip something I've done many a times in the woods, lol! Roslyn running is only hard if you make it hard and run beyond what you are capable.

  6. What you said about muscles needing oxygen is very true! When you're out there and running you need your muscles to carry you out on your exercise. Thanks for the reminder!

  7. I walk. I don't run (not any more). I find it doesn't hurt, and if I swing my arms I can get a really good work-out without as much pain. I hope you can run pain-free, too!

    1. Walking is a great exercise Tina especially if you walk at a quick pace, swinging your arms :D when running hurts, I always walk to feel better. Rarely I have this problem because I do not want to overtrain and get an injury.

  9. I never been into running. I did use to jog in the morning to stay active when I was younger. But I had a knee injuring that never got taken cared of and it is painful for me to run/squat/go up the stairs...I also dislike feeling out of breath too so I don't run for those reason but is so envious of people that can run!

    1. Marielle it's too bad about your knee, you can do exercises (easy ones) to strengthen the muscles around your knee. Message me on Facebook if you'd like to know what exercises.

  10. Comment by Pat Moon ----
Running requires a certain endurance. Endurance requires building up gradually with the proper knowledge. Being uninformed about how to take up a new exercise requires learning how to do it properly. The part about your muscles requiring oxygen is so true. Usually we only think about our lungs needing oxygen but in fact every ounce of our body needs oxygen to function properly.

  11. The walk-run combo makes so much sense, Gilly. I guess so many people overdo it when they start running exactly because they don't understand how muscles work. Your great explanation should put THAT one to rest! ;-)

  12. Great post! It takes a little bit to recognize the difference between pain from exertion and discomfort from pushing yourself to the next level. I have deciphered that incorrectly in the past and had to deal with a few days of soreness! I love the interval tip. It is so helpful to keep you going when you get tired or out of breath, rather than just quitting. Thanks for sharing this post!
